CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati cross country team raced at the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday morning in Louisville, Ky., with the men placing eighth in the 29-team field and the women 19th as both took part in the 'gold' race held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. Aaron Bienenfeld and Andrew Schille each finished in the Top 15, placing ninth and 12th, respectively, to pace the men while Hannah Markel led a women's team that saw its first five runners finish within 23 seconds of one another for the smallest spread of any team in the meet.

The UC men placed three individuals in the Top 50 of the race to score 247 points and place eighth overall while the women scored 415 points to place 19th overall. In the men's competition, North Central (Ill.), the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, won the title with 102 points while Kentucky (110), Belmont (117), Louisville (155) and East Tennessee State (175) rounded out the Top 5. In the women's race, #10 Michigan took the crown with 46 points while Eastern Kentucky (120), SMU (160), Kentucky (175) and Middle Tennessee State (248) comprised the Top 5.

For the second meet in a row, Bienenfeld was first Bearcats man across the finish line as he covered the 8,000m course in 23:56.8 to place ninth overall, marking his second Top 10 finish in a row after placing fourth at the John McNichols Invitational two weeks ago. Bienenfeld's time not only saw him break 24 minutes, but also lower is UC personal-best time by 1:04.4, bettering the 25:01.2 he ran at the McNichols event.
Bienenfeld wasn't the only man to record a PR on the day as the next nine Bearcats across the line followed suit. Schille was 12th overall in 24:06.1 and Ryan Guenthner, a Louisville native, placed 48th overall in 24:55.2 to give UC three placers in the Top 50. Schille's time bettered his previous PR by 4.3 seconds (24:10.4) while Guenthner chopped 40.9 second off his time (25:36.1) with both runners recording their previous time at the NCAA Pre-National meet on this same course one year ago. The Top 5 finishers were rounded out by Nick Grismer, who was 79th overall in 25:20.4, a PR of 10.3 seconds, and Toni Banos, who was 108th in 25:39.0, an improvement of 43.7 seconds.
The next five individuals also recorded PRs with Christian Stevens leading the way as he not only placed 128th overall, his time of 25:45.3 lowered his previous best by 1:08. He was followed by Michael Vitucci (134th in 25:46.6), a 7.2 second PR; Matt Stump (155th in 26:04.6), a PR of 52.5 seconds; Steven Zombory (164th in 26:11.1), a PR of 17.6 seconds; and Keifer Mosmeier (182nd in 26:24.8), a PR of 1:06.1, the second-largest of the day. Two others raced for the Bearcats on the day with Jake Barnes placing 218th (27:18.2) and Jack Cordonnier taking 221st (27:22.0).
// WOMEN'S 5,000m RACE
The women finished in a tight grouping as the Top 5 finished within 23 seconds of one another. Markel led the charge by placing 69th overall in 18:24.1, a season-best time by just over 23 seconds. From there, the next four placed from 92nd to 96th with Ellee Bullock leading the way in 92nd place at 18:37.1, a PR of 39 seconds. Katrina Patters (18:37.6), Sam Mikula (18:43.0) and Maggie Breitenstein (18:47.5) followed, placing 93rd, 94th and 96th, respectively. Of that trio, both Patterson and Breitenstein posted PRs with Patterson lowering her best by 29 seconds and Breitenstein tallying both a lifetime PR (12.2) and collegiate PR (39.9).
Sammy Hentz led the next five finishers as she placed 113th overall, running 18:55.5 to lower her PR by 54.7 seconds. Madalyn O'Dea ran a season-best and collegiate PR time (by 35.4) of 19:31.9 to finish 173rd overall while Sydney Hess was 1898th in 19:44.7, lowering her PR by 13.8 seconds. Janey McManus and Tes Corea raced for the first time this season with McManus running 21:24.9 to place 217th and Corea taking 223rd overall in 22:33.2.

UC returns to action in two weeks at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Ill. The meet, which will take place Friday, October 12, will be the final tune-up for the Bearcats before they compete in the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championships in New Orleans (Oct. 25).
