CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati junior guard Jarron Cumberland (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington High School) was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for a league-high fourth time Monday. Cumberland averaged 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 45.2 percent from the field to help extend Cincinnati's win streak to six games with a pair of victories last week.
Cumberland tallied a game-high 25 points, including 16 in the second half, as the Bearcats rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to earn a 72-68 victory at Temple on Sunday. Cumberland led Cincinnati in points, rebounds (eight) and assists (three) against Temple. It marked the second time this season the junior has led the Bearcats in points, rebounds and assists in a game. He scored a game-high 23 points with five three-pointers and five assists leading Cincinnati to an 88-64 home win over Tulsa on Thursday, Jan. 24.
It marks the second consecutive week Cumberland has received the league's top weekly honor. He earned the honor a week ago after scoring a career-high 32 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the floor and 14-of-16 shooting at the free throw line against USF (Jan. 15). The effort helped Cumberland join Cincinnati's 1,000-point club.
Cumberland has scored 20 or more points in 10 games this season, including five times in league play. Only former Bearcats Sean Kilpatrick (19 in 2013-14) and Deonta Vaughn (11 in 2007-08) have posted more 20-points games in a season during the Mick Cronin coaching era (since the start of 2006-07).
For the season, Cumberland is averaging 18.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists with 50 three-pointers. He has led the Bearcats in scoring in 13 of 21 games this season, including each of the last five contests.
Cumberland enters the week leading all league players in scoring since the start of AAC action, averaging 22.0 points. Entering Sunday, Cumberland was listed among the league leaders for all games in eight categories: three-point field goal percentage (second at .434), points (sixth at 18.1), three-pointers made (sixth at 2.5), assist-to-turnover ratio (11th at 1.4), assists (12th at 3.4), free throw percentage (13th at .783), steals (tied for 13th at 1.4) and minutes played (19th at 30.7).
Earlier in January, Cumberland was named to the Lute Olson Player of the Year Award Mid-Season Watch List. He was tabbed to the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Watch List and was voted a first team All-AAC selection in the preseason by league coaches.
Cumberland was named to The American's All-Rookie Team and was the AAC's Co-Sixth Man of the Year in 2016-17.
Temple's Shizz Alston, Jr., and UCF's Aubrey Dawkins rank behind Cumberland for the most AAC player of the week honors this season with two each.
