CINCINNATI –The University of Cincinnati track and field team was in action at three meets in two states Friday with the third day of the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium Thursday, day two of the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas at the Texas State Track & Field Complex and the first day of the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California.
A pair of Bearcats, Aaron Bienenfeld and Andrew Schille, ran the 5,000m at Stanford and it yielded the No. 2 and No. 3 UC record times in the event. Bienenfeld ran in section two and clocked 13:57.81, shattering his previous PR of 14:12.84 and becoming just the second UC runner ever to go under 14 minutes in the 5,000 along with UC record holder Eric Finan (13:44.91/2011).
Schille ran 14:14.97 in section three, placing eighth and becoming only the third UC runner to break 14:15.00 in the 5,000m. The duo ranks No. 1 and No. 3 in the American this outdoor season while Bienenfeld's time also leads the NCAA East Region.
Caisja Chandler, the American Athletic Conference Indoor Female Freshman of the Year, picked up right where she left off in Birmingham, Alabama, running a PR of 11.67 in the preliminary round of the 100 meters at the Texas Relays. She did not qualify for the final but clocked the fifth-best time in UC history in her first collegiate outdoor event.
The 4x400m-relay squad of Haisha Bisiolu, Faith Banks, Chandler and Kylie Cutlip qualified for Saturday's final in Austin with a preliminary run of 3:44.11 which won heat two.
Annette Echikunwoke placed third in the hammer throw in San Marcos, finishing with a season-best throw of 62.52m (205-01.00). She bettered her mark from the Texas Relays from yesterday by almost three meters (59.75m/196-00.00). Her toss is the best in the American this season by over two meters, No. 9 in the NCAA East Region and 17th in the NCAA overall. The senior will close out the weekend with the shot put at the Texas Relays on Saturday afternoon.
Marcus Abraham had a third-place finish in the shot put in Austin, heaving a PR of 17.55m (57-07.00), which sits as UC's third-best throw all time. It is the third-best mark in the American this outdoor season.
Irati Mitxelena had PR leap of 12.92m (42-04.75) in the triple jump at the Texas Relays. She placed 12th but bettered her own No. 2 mark in UC history and ranks No. 2 in the American and No. 4 in the NCAA East Region this season.
Katrina Patterson ran to a Top-10 finish in the 5,000m at Texas State, clocking a PR of 17:49.61, bettering her previous mark by over a minute (18:50.28).
Albert Kalala placed second in the Bobcat Invitational high jump with a personal-best leap of 2.05m (6-08.75).
Saturday sees action continue at the Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational while a number of local Bearcats will be taking part in Cedarville's Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open.
