CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati defensive tackle Cortez Broughton (Warner Robins, Georgia/Veterans) was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the seventh round of the NFL Draft Saturday.
Broughton, a 2018 First-Team All-American Athletic Conference selection, was chosen by the Chargers with the 28th pick of the seventh round, the 242nd overall. It is the fourth-straight year a UC player has been taken in the NFL Draft.
He closed out his career with 49 games played, 155 tackles, 27.5 tackles for a loss, 10.0 sacks, 11 passes defended, a forced fumble, fumble recovery, interception and blocked kick ... his sack (6.5) and TFL (17.5) numbers in 2018 surpassed his career numbers for the previous three years as he entered the season with 3.5 sacks and 10 TFLs, respectively.
One of UC's 2018 captains, Broughton was a 13-game starter in the middle of the defense line. He made 51 stops, including a team-best 17.5 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks. He was third in the American in tackles for a loss (1.35 per game) and tied for fifth in sacks (0.5 per game)
Broughton set career marks with 3.5 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks in the 2018 opener at UCLA. He was was dominant against Navy, posting a career-best 10 tackles and helping to lead the effort which held the Midshipmen to under 175 yards of total offense and only 124 yards rushing. The senior closed out his career with five tackles in the Military Bowl against Virginia Tech.
LOOKING AHEAD
UC opens the 2019 campaign against UCLA on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats finished 2018 with 11 or more wins for the third time in program history (2008, 2009) and knocked off Virginia Tech in the 2018 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman. Looking ahead at 2019, UC is set to return more than 85% of its roster, over 5,000 yards of total offense, 10 of its Top-15 tacklers and 14 starters from the 2018 squad.
