TicketsCINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track & field program sent eight individuals out to compete Friday at the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Round meet in Jacksonville, Fla., with Caisja Chandler putting on a show to lead the way for the Bearcats inside Hodges Stadium on the North Florida campus. Chandler, who nearly reached the national final in the 100m dash, came back a little over one hour later and qualified for the 200m quarterfinal with a school-record performance.
// FASTEST WOMEN IN PROGRAM HISTORY
Chandler continued her stellar rookie season Friday as she nearly earned a berth to the NCAA Finals in the 100m, placing 15th overall, while also reaching the quarterfinals of the 200m. First, she ran the short race, covering the straightaway in 11.43, leaving her three positions shy of earning a ticket to Austin. Later in the day, she ran the first round of the 200m and turned in a gem of a time as she clocked in at 23.04 to place second in her heat and earn a spot in Saturday's quarterfinal. Her time in the 200m broke the previous school record of 23.09 that was held by Kenya Woodall since 2016. The holder of both freshman records in the 100m and 200m, Chandler now holds the overall school record in both events, making her the fastest woman in program history. Not only will she have a chance at reaching Austin in the 200m Saturday, she also will be running the 4x100m relay, as will Haisha Bisiolu, who finished 30th in the 200m today with a season-best time of 23.69. The duo will race with Faith Banks and Tiona Lattimore Saturday at 6 p.m.

The men's 200m first round races featured a pair of UC men with both Chris Borzor and Quincy Mitchell taking the track. Borzor was up first with the rookie running 20.82 to finish third in his heat and earn an automatic berth into tomorrow's quarterfinal. Later in the event, fellow freshman Quincy Mitchell raced to a time of 21.18 to finish 33rd overall, seeing his freshman campaign come to a close.

Two Bearcats were part of the pole vault competition Friday as Sadie Brass and Brooke Catherine battled the field before seeing their senior seasons and UC careers come to a close. Brass, in her first regional meet, cleared 3.92m (12-10.25) to finish in a tie for 26th while Catherine, a three-time regional participant and two-time AAC champion, cleared the same height and finished 33rd overall based on missed attempts at earlier heights.

Two Bearcats also took part in the discus with both Malin Smith and Sam Meece competing. Smith led off the day in the women's competition and posted a best of 42.01m (137-10), which placed her 46th overall. Later, Meece competed and sent the plate out to 52.87m (173-05) to finish 31st. While Meece's season comes to a close, Smith will take part in the shot put tomorrow.

Twelve Bearcats are set to compete on the final day of action Saturday with six in the field and six on the track. Action gets underway at 2:45 p.m. with Marcus Abraham in the men's shot put and at 3 p.m. with both Kennedy Marable and Irati Mitxelena taking part in the triple jump. The women's 4x100m relay team will be the first on the track as Faith Banks, Bisiolu, Chandler and Tiona Lattimore will race a 6 p.m. while Aaron Bienenfeld will close out the day with the men's 5,000m run at 8:45 p.m.
