CINCINNATI - Three University of Cincinnati freshmen took part in the USATF U20 Championships over the weekend at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Fla., with a pair of sprinters, Caisja Chandler and Quincy Mitchell, each earning a place on the U.S. U20 National Team following their performances. Both runners will represent the U.S. at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships in Costa Rica, July 19-21.

// CHANDLER GOES FAST
Chandler raced in the 100m and 200m events and reached the finals in both races. First, she took part in the 100m on Saturday and ran 11.34 in the prelims to rank third overall before finishing fourth in the final later that day in 11.33, just 0.03 off her personal best. Then, Sunday, she took part in the 200m and raced to a time of 23.24 in the prelims to qualify third before running 23.07 in the final to finish third as well.

// MITCHELL POSTS IMPROVEMENT
Like Chandler, Mitchell had a similar race schedule. First, he took part in the 100m prelims and finished 10th overall with a best of 10.44. Sunday, he took on the field in the 200m and turned in a time of 20.96 in the prelims to earned the fifth qualifying spot. In the final, he ran a personal-best time and the #2 time in program history of 20.84 to finish third. His time beat the previous school record of 20.87 (Kenny Wade, 2004) and sits second behind fellow freshman Chris Borzor, who ran 20.57 earlier this year.

// REPPING THE RED, WHITE & BLUE
With their finishes, both Chandler and Mitchell were selected to Team USA as members of the relay pool. Both are eligible to line up for the Americans in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays as the competition will have a preliminary and final round of competition.

// SMITH IN THE THROWS
Malin Smith competed in a pair of events with both throws taking place Saturday, June 22. She opened her weekend with the discus, but was unable to register a mark on her three attempts. Later in the day, she took part in the shot put and placed sixth overall with a best of 14.37m (47-01.75).

// MORE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Earlier this month, Aaron Bienenfeld continued his competitive season in his native Germany and captured a pair of runner-up finishes in national championship competitions. First, on June 8, he took part in the Germany 10,000m Championships where he ran 29:30.12 to finish second with his time not only standing as a personal best, but also a UC school record, bettering his own mark of 29:34.37 run earlier this year at the Penn Relays. One week later, he took part in the Germany U23 Championships and raced in the 5,000m run as he was second once again, this time in 14:16.59. With his placements, he earned a spot on the German U23 National Team that will compete at the U23 European Championships in Gavle, Sweden, July 11-14.
