CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati student-athletes posted another record-breaking semester in fall 2020, despite the challenges presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
With nearly all classes moved to a virtual setting, the Bearcats posted a student-athlete cumulative GPA of 3.398, bettering the 3.396 set in spring 2020. This marks the 25th-consecutive grading period, dating to winter 2010, the student-athletes GPA has been a 3.0 or above.
"I am extremely proud of our student-athletes for their outstanding effort in the classroom last fall," Director of Athletics John Cunningham said. "They faced a significant number of obstacles, navigating COVID protocols and a virtual educational environment among other things but exceeded expectations and performed at a record-setting level. That is Next Level Success personified. My thanks and admiration go out to all of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and academic staff for this awesome accomplishment."
The department's academic data for fall 2020 is based off of actual letter grades. Some students had the option to select a P grade for anything above a C- during the marking period.
Overall, all 16 of the schools 16 programs recorded a team GPA of 3.0 or higher while 11 teams had a 3.4 GPA or higher, and 8 of the 16 had a 3.5 team GPA or higher.
Women's tennis, led by Head Coach Eric Toth posted the highest GPA of all teams and their highest GPA ever with a 3.881 while men's cross country led all men's teams with a 3.785.
Additionally, men's basketball and men's and women's track and field broke their previous team high GPA records.
Individually, 66 Bearcats achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs this Fall to earn TopCat distinction, this is just off the mark from Spring 2020 when 68 student-athletes earned this achievement.
Overall, a record breaking 255 (58% of all Bearcats) earned Dean's List honors with a 3.4 or higher GPA and a record breaking 338 (77%) posted a 3.0 or higher GPA.
