TicketsAUGUSTA, Kansas – The University of Cincinnati cross country teams started their season Saturday at the JK Gold Classic with the men's team winning its meet and the women's team placing second at the 4-Mile Creek Resort in Augusta, Kansas.
The men's team scored 34 points to top host Wichita State (58), Temple (59) and Oklahoma City (79) in the 6k race.
Aaron Bienenfeld placed second, breaking the line with a time of 17:45.17, just behind the winning time of 17:40.00 by Oklahoma City's Zouhair Talbi – the runner-up at the NJCAA Cross Country Championship a year ago.
Alec Sanduksy came home fourth, Tyler Wirth was seventh, Toni Banos placed 10th and Julius Hild took 11th. Non-team scoring runners were Nick Dehaven in 16th, Matt Stump in 20th and Ryan Guenthner in 24th.
In the women's 5k event, the Shockers scored 25 points to finish on top, sweeping two of the top-three places. The Bearcats were second with 32 points and Oklahoma City was third with 77 points.
Ellie Leather ran second behind Wichita State's Winny Koskei who set the course record with a first-place run of 17:19.13. Leather timed in at 17:24.51 in her season-opening effort.
Maddie Walker (fourth) and Katrina Patterson (fifth) rounded out the top five while Jodie Pierce was 10th, Lauren Kemper 11th, Leah Maschino 13th, Maggie Breitenstein 15th and Caitlyn Wade placed 18th.

With the abbreviated cross-country season, UC returns to action in the American Athletic Conference Championship, set for Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021 at the same course, 4-Mile Creek Resort, in Kansas.
