CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team opened its season with a 4-3 dual-meet win over Northern Illinois on Saturday at the Western Athletic Club.
The Bearcats (1-0) won the doubles point, taking two of the three contests and then finished an even 3-3 with the Huskies (0-3) in singles.
The doubles teams of Kim Gintrand and Ioana Guna 7-6,(6), as well as Alexia Countino and Cassie McLay 6-4 won their bouts.
The Bearcats would go on to tie in singles posting three wins. Kim Gintrand would go down early in the first set, 3-6, only to battle her way back, securing a 7-2 win in her second set. Gintrand then went on to have a dominating third set with a score of 6-1.
Maria Santilli and Kelli Niehaus both boosted the Bearcats with a pair of dominant performances. Santilli would take an early lead with a score of 6-2, she then went to work, fighting her way back to secure her second set win with a score of 7-6 (3).
Niehaus would post the fastest win of the day with a clean 2-0 sweep over her Huskies foe, opening with a quick 6-3 first-set edge, followed by a 6-4 margin in the second.
