CINCINNATI – Freshman Jillian Hayes scored 17 as the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team nearly completed a furious second-half comeback in a 60-52 loss to Wichita State on Wednesday at Fifth Third Arena.
Trailing 50-38 at the start of the fourth quarter, UC used a 14-3 run to pull the deficit down to three at 55-52 after an IImar'I Thomas layup with 2:28 to go. UC would miss its final five shots and the Shockers held on to claim a 60-52 win.
Hayes, averaging 9.0 points in league play, knocked down six shots, including a pair of triples to go along with four assists and two blocks in the loss. She has had four double-digit scoring efforts over UC's last five games, averaging 13.0 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game during that span.
The Bearcats (3-10, 2-7 American) have dropped three of their last four games.
Wichita State (4-6, 1-4) picked up its first conference win on the strength of a 17-point performance from Asia Strong along with double-digit efforts from Trajata Colbert and Seraphine Bastin, who finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Shamaryah Duncan pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Thomas and Arame Niang both nearly finished with double-doubles for UC. Thomas had 13 points and seven rebounds while Niang had 13 point and nine rebounds.
