CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team lost a Saturday nonconference contest at No. 25 Clemson, falling in a 5-2 decision at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Paul Komistek had his first home run of the season while Eric Santiago finished 2-for-4 with a double.
A three-run fifth inning for Clemson (2-0) proved to be the difference as the Bearcats (1-0) scattered two runs and seven hits in the loss.
LHP Dean McCarthy took the loss despite pitching well and wasn't able to catch many breaks in his UC debut. He surrendered a double to Clemson's Wright on the fourth pitch of the game and the first run crossed the plate after a pair of ground outs. From there, McCarthy retired 10 of the next 12 batters he faced.
In the bottom of the fifth, Clemson loaded the bases with no outs and a Teodosio hit took a bad hop and skipped over 2B Jace Mercer and into center field. After a lengthy pause for a replay checking for fielder interference, McCarthy gave up a walk which scored one and induced a sacrifice liner to right from Brewer for the first out of the inning and made the score 3-1. McCarthy gave way to RHP Jalen Wade who induced a 5-3 double play featuring a defensive gem by Santiago to end the inning.
Komistek's homer led off the sixth to the deepest part of the ballpark. UC scored in consecutive innings as LF Griffin Merritt had an RBI double in the top of the seventh to score Santiago. UC stranded six runners in the game.
