TicketsCINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Northern Kentucky on Sunday at the Western Athletic Club.
UC started the afternoon off strong with a 6-3 win from the No. 1 doubles team of Alexia Coutino and Cassie McLay and a 6-1 victory from the No. 3 squad of Emma Miceli and Kelli Niehaus. The No. 2 duo of Kim Gintrand and Ioana Guna were ahead 4-3 in an unfinished match.
The Bearcats won four of the six singles matches to take the overall win over the Norse. Guna was the first UC victory with a 7-6, 6-1 comeback win at No. 1 singles. At one point early, Guna trailed NKU's Margita Sunjic 4-1 but rallied to win the first set and then cruised in the second.
Micelli was next with a 6-4, 6-1 win and Niehaus, who was celebrating her birthday Sunday, clinched the match for UC with her 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles.
Maria Santilli won a stirring 10-point, third-set tiebreaker after winning the first set 6-0 and dropping the second set 7-6 with an 8-6 tiebreaker.
