CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis team dropped 4-3 to crosstown rival Xavier in its first outdoor home match of the season. Cincinnati (2-8, 0-3 AAC) battled through singles play after Xavier (9-1) claimed the doubles point 2-1, giving it an early one-point advantage.
THE BREAKDOWN
Finishing first for Bearcats was the doubles team of Alexia Coutino and Cassie McLay, who secured a dominating 6-1 victory after taking an early set lead to start the match.
Following doubles play Ioana Guna claimed a much-needed singles point for the Bearcats, closing the Musketeers lead by two. Guna was able to fight through two sets, securing a two-set sweep on back-to-back 6-4 finishes.
Over on court four, Maria Santilli battled through three sets with Xavier's Anna Roggenburk. Santilli outperformed Roggenburk in the first set, taking a 6-1 set one victory. Roggenburk then rallied through the final two sets, posting the two set (6-3, 6-2) comeback for the Musketeers.
Kellie Niehaus posted a strong finish against Xavier's Kaitlin Ruether after two tiebreaking sets resulted in Niehaus' favor. Niehaus got out to an early one set lead taking the first set 7-6(5). She then dropped the second set 6-4 but secured the super tiebreaker 1-0(6) for the Bearcats.
Emma Miceli pushed through three sets against Xavier's Imani Graham posting a 2-1 victory over Graham on a super tiebreaker to end the match. Miceli teetered back-and-forth with Graham to start the first set where Graham was able to edge out a 7-6(6) tiebreak to get the match started. Miceli then answered with a set point of her own, eliminating Grahams lead. The two went onto end the match on a super tiebreaker of their own, where Miceli took the third set 1-0(7).
