CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis team showed out on Wednesday afternoon claiming a dominating 7-0 sweep over the University of Dayton at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center. This marks Cincinnati's (3-8) first 7-0 sweep since February 28, 2020 where the Bearcats took down Wright State inside the Western Athletic Club.
Cincinnati Claimed the early doubles point over the Flyers (5-9) with commanding performances by the all the doubles teams. The Bearcats claimed two 6-1 set finishes in its first two doubles matches Wednesday, resulting in an unfinished mark for the third doubles match.
Cincinnati kept its momentum rolling through singles play, claiming six, 2-0 set sweeps. The Bearcats put the match away after Ioana Guna fought back through set one overcoming a two-point deficit to take the first set 6-4. Guna polished off the match with a 6-0 second set finish and the Bearcats seventh 6-0 set of the day.
THE BREAKDOWN
The Doubles team of Emma Miceli and Kelli Niehaus got things going for the Bearcats, taking a dominating 6-1 victory over the Flyers.
Following suit, Alexia Coutino and Cassie McLay posted a 6-1 set win of their own, giving the Bearcats and early one point advantage over Dayton.
Moving into singles play, Miceli kept the pressure on, securing the quickest match of the day with two flawless 6-0 set wins. With today's wins Miceli moves to 6-2 in singles play and 4-4 in doubles play, with an overall record of 10-6.
Miceli now moves into the UC record books top-10 for all time singles wins, sharing the No.9 spot with a total win count of 66. She is also one win shy of jumping into the top-10 all-time doubles wins with a total count of 53.
Next door Maria Santilli put on a show of her own, matching Miceli's performance with two 6-0 sets, enough to secure her fourth victory of the season.
Claiming her first collegiate singles win was Cassie McLay who put up a (6-0,6-2) two set sweep over Dayton Wednesday afternoon.
