TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team had a 3-2 lead early but lost to South Florida 12-3 in American Athletic Conference action at USF Baseball Stadium Saturday.
Cincinnati (20-20, 9-10 AAC) stranded 12 runners in the game and couldn't seize the offensive momentum after plating three runs in the third inning.
Jace Mercer's triple to right-center field in the third scored Joe Powell and Joey Bellini's RBI single scored Mercer. Ryan Nicholson later added a two-out single of his own to score Bellini.
Mercer finished 2-for-3 with a triple, walk, stolen base, run scored and RBI while Bellini, Nicholson, Santiago and Wyatt Stapp all belted two hits.
USF scored two-out runs in both the third and fourth innings to lead 4-3. The Bulls scored four runs on five hits in the sixth and added three more in the eighth to get to double digits.
UC started Beau Keathley (1-2) took the loss while USF's Logan Lyle (2-1) earned the win. The Bulls Jake Sullivan had four RBIs while Bearcats hurlers gave up five doubles, six walks and hit three batters.
