CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati track and field team qualified four student-athletes, Taylor Beard (high jump), Aaron Bienenfeld (10,000m), Caisja Chandler (100m & 200m) and Damien Berthenet (decathlon), in five events for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, set to run from June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
UC competed this weekend at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Florida. Berthenet, a multi-event athlete, advanced directly to the championship meet as the decathlon was not contested at the regional meets. The NCAA Championship meet will mirror the regional setup, being held over four days with alternating men's and women's competitions. The men take part on Wednesday and Friday with the women in action Thursday and Saturday.
BEARD
Beard placed ninth in the high jump, tying her own personal best at 1.82m and qualifying for a trip to Hayward Field. She previously earned All-America honors at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
BERTHENET
The 2021 American Athletic Conference Champion indoors in the heptathlon, Berthenet put together his qualifying and personal-best mark of 7,686 points at the Tennessee Relays on April 8-9 where he won the event. He had to pull out of the competition at the AAC outdoor meet after suffering an injury. Berthenet broke the 17-year-old school record of UC Associate Head Coach Chris Wineberg with his win in Knoxville. Wineberg posted a mark of 7,584 points in 2004. Berthenet's point total ranked 10th in the NCAA during the 2021 outdoor season.
BIENENFELD
Bienenfeld, who also ran in the NCAA Cross Country and NCAA Indoor Championships this season, will complete the trifecta in Eugene in June in the 10k. He ran with the lead group for most of his race on Wednesday and crossed the line in 28:42.45 to place fourth. Bienenfeld was thwarted in his quest to also run the 5,000m at Hayward Field as he finished 18th in a Friday race in Jacksonville.
CHANDLER
Chandler put together a banner day in Jacksonville, qualifying for the NCAA meet in two events, the 100m and 200m, while breaking her own personal best, school record and hitting the U.S. Olympic Trials standard with her 22.79 in the 200. Her previous best was 22.85, set just weeks ago at the American Athletic Conference Championship. She placed sixth in the race and had her second Top-10 in the 100m with an 11.26 effort which sealed a spot in Oregon.
