CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team saw its 2021 season end with a 19-6 loss to top-seeded Florida in the semifinals of the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday at Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.
It was the final career games for fifth-year players Monica Borzillo, Adrianna Fess, Alexandra Fess, Amanda Fess, Sam Mlkvy and Gianna Napoletano along with fourth-year seniors Alyssa Adams, Kate Carney, Morgan Dukes, Jennie Finotti, Taylor Gysin and Ali Mazzola.
The combined senior classes represent some of the top players in school history including Borzillo, the Bearcats first four-time all-conference honoree, who holds UC records in 16 categories featuring points (342), goals (197) and assists (145).
Mlkvy closes out her six-year collegiate career as UC's career leader in games played (79) and draw controls (280) among others. Dukes leaves UC with the top mark in career ground balls (183).
Cincinnati (7-10) was within a goal of the Gators at 3-2 after Anna Platou's third goal of the season, but the Gators exploded for four goals in a span of 58 seconds to break it open. Shelton
UC trailed 14-2 at the break after being down 3-2 with 19:26 left. The Bearcats were outshot 22-9 but did put eight of nine shots on goal. UC goalkeeper Sarah Reznick made six first-half saves to deny the visitors.
The Gators (15-2) finished with a 34-16 advantage in shots and scored six goals on free positions. Florida advances to face either Temple or Vanderbilt in Saturday's championship final as the Gators improved to 3-0 all-time in The American Championship.
The Bearcats were led by Napoletano, who had two goals. Gianna Pope made six saves in goal. Borzillo, Carney and Kylie Nause were UC's other scorers.
