// CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati cross country teams competed in their second race of the season at the All-Ohio Championship. Even without their full squads racing, both the Bearcats' men and women's teams were competitive in Cedarville.
The women's team placed 9th of the 34 total teams in attendance and 5th of 8 Division I teams. The men's team only scored 4 runners, so they were not given a place. Teams need to score 5 runners to place. Miami (OH) won both titles at the meet.
Julius Hild was the top finisher for UC in the men's 8k with a time of 25:14.5, which earned him 5th place overall, and 4th of the Division I schools. Leah Maschino was the top finisher for the women in the 6k event, placing 26th overall and 18th of Division I runners with a time of 23:14.7.
Lucas Rothenberger, head coach of the men's squad, said of his team's performance: "We ran a partial squad today, and I think we saw some encouraging things. Julius Hild and Christian Stevens ran tough. It was pretty rough conditions by race time, so I was very encouraged by how they competed. We will take what we learned today and continue to evolve and grow as a team. I'd expect us to run our full varsity lineup when we race at Notre Dame in two weeks. Today wasn't a glamorous outing, but it was necessary for the development of some key members of our team. All in all, it was a solid day."
Lara Rogers, women's head coach, also said "We had a couple solid individual performances today. Leah Maschino had a very solid day as our top runner. And it's nice to have Sam Mikula back making big gains week by week. We didn't run our full lineup but are piecing things to together week by week. Group is working hard and I'm excited to see the full squad together. Expect that pre-nationals weekend."
// MEN'S RACE
As Rothenberger said, the All-Ohio Invite was encouraging in showing the depth of the men's squad. The course was run entirely in the sun at 2:00 p.m. on a 90-degree day so it took a lot of strength to compete. Hild hung with the top group of runners for the first half of the race and was able to cement his place in 5th toward the end, even passing a few runners in the finish chute. Christian Stevens also performed well, finishing second for the UC men and 21st overall with a time of 26:00.8.
// WOMEN'S RACE
Throughout the women's 6k, the race seemed to be divided into a few groups on different paces. Maschino ran a great pace for the 6k, staying strong enough to slowly make her way up to the front during the second half of the race. Maddie Walker finished second for UC, sinishing 34th overall and 23rd in Division I with a time of 23:30.3
