Lucas Rothenberger joined the UC cross cross country/track and field program in April 2021 as an assistant coach working with the men's cross country and distance runners.

In year two at Cincinnati Rothenberger's athletes took big strides. During the cross country season Milo Greder and Tyler Wirth development reached new heights. The duo placed sixth and seventh at the AAC championships and each earned all conference honors as the team placed third overall with 84 points. At the NCAA Greats Lakes Regional his Bearcats finished 10th overall as Wirth lead the way finishing 51st.

During the indoor season his group recorded 13 UC all-time top 10 times across four events and broke two school records. He guided Wirth to run the first sub four minute mile by a Bearcat in program history. His athletes put on a show at the AAC indoor championships scoring 45 of the teams 143 points as the Bearcat men would win their first conference indoor title since 1995. His DMR team broke the program record to secure the conference title with a time of 9:41.29. Greder was coached to two medals as he placed second in 5000m and third in 3000m. Wirth would go on to earn his first conference championship medal by placing in the mile and first as part of the DMR team. In his first real recruiting year, freshman Seth Elking made a big impact on the team as he broke both the freshman mile and 3000m records.

The outdoor season was filled with similar success as his athletes recorded six UC all-time top 10 performances. Guided Wirth (1500m) and Greder (5,000m) to the NCAA East First Round and helped the Program send the most individual event qualifiers in program history to the meet. At the AAC Championships Wirth and Greder shined bright as each earned their first individual AAC event championships. Wirth took home first in the 1500m breaking the UC record with a time of 3:41.42. Greder won the 10,000m race with one big finial kick to earn the gold. The team finished third overall in their final meet in the AAC before moving to the Big 12.

In first season at the helm of the men’s cross country and distance runners he guided the men’s cross country team to a third place finish at the AAC championships scoring 79 points. He led the development of Alec Sandusky, who finished third overall at the AAC cross country championships and placed sixth overall at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.  As a team at the 2021 Great Lakes Regional the Bearcats finished eighth overall scoring 218 points, tying the best team finish at the meet in program history.

During the indoor season, he guided Tyler Wirth to break the UC mile record during the season. At the ACC Championships helped the men’s team tie their best finish at the meet in program history as the team finished second with 115 points.  His athletes earned two medals during the meet as Wirth placed third in the men’s mile and the DMR team places second.

Rothenberger came to UC after spending two years with the University of Tulsa's cross country and track and field programs, where he found instant success as the assistant coach helping drive the program to compete in multiple championships.

"I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to come be a part of the University of Cincinnati's Cross Country and Track and Field family, and I cannot thank Susan Seaton enough for her belief in me," Rothenberger said. "I truly believe the sky's the limit for this program and I honestly believe it's on the cusp of some exciting breakthroughs. I haven't felt this level of excitement in a long time, and for lack of a better word, I'm just pumped to get this going and see how far we can take this team."
