SOUTH BEND – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team took down Notre Dame in four sets (34-32, 23-25, 25-14, 25-21) Saturday night in South Bend, Ind. This was the second of three games that the Bearcats will play this weekend at the Notre Dame Tournament. As a team, the Bearcats (2-3) finished the game with 69 kills, 8 blocks, 79 digs and 66 assists.
The big story of the night was Cincinnati's Maria Mallon. The senior led all players in kills (24) and digs (25), which are both career-highs. Mallon was not the only Bearcat to set a career-high, with Sarah Norcom and Emme Madden putting up some personal bests as well.
GAME NOTES
The Bearcats and the Irish battled throughout the first set, but eventually the Bearcats would go up 1-0 by beating Notre Dame 34-32 in a wild set one. Cincinnati was down 24-19 but stormed back to tie it. This set was tied at scores of 4, 5, 6, 12, 13, 18, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32. For those counting at home, that is 15 ties in set one. In set two, Notre Dame would eventually tie the game up by winning 25-23. In another close set, it started to become clear that Maria Mallon had it going. She had nine kills in set one and five in set two.
Despite the Bearcats dropping the second set, they stormed back to win the third, 25-14. Mallon had seven more kills in set three. The Bearcats ended the third set on a 15-2 run, giving them plenty of momentum going into the fourth. In set four, Notre Dame jumped out to an 11-6 lead, but efforts by Shannon Williams and Kailea Carrier helped the Bearcats fight their way back. A 5-0 run by Cincinnati, which started with a kill by Norcom to tie it at 17, put the Bearcats up 21-17. After the four-point advantage, they did not look back. They won set four, 25-21, which clinched the victory on Saturday night.

The Bearcats stay in South Bend to take on the Bowling Green Sunday. This is the last game of the Notre Dame Tournament for the Bearcats. The Bowling Green matchup will take place Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET.
