CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team scored six runs in the first inning on the way to an 11-1, seven-inning win over Tulane on Friday in American Athletic Conference action at UC Baseball Stadium.
The game ended after seven innings due to the AAC 10-run rule being in effect. Cincinnati (28-24, 17-14 AAC) earned the series win over Tulane (28-21, 17-9 AAC) with Saturday's finale still to play.
UC's first five batters of the game reached with Cole Harting and Jace Mercer hitting back-to-back singles, Eric Santiago reaching on and error which scored Harting, Ryan Nicholson's RBI single to right and Paul Komistek's three-run, laser shot which landed almost 400 feet from home plate near O'Varsity Way.
Dondrae Bremner got in on the action with a two-out single of his own and he scored the final run of the inning courtesy of a Joe Powell RBI single to right field.
That was all the cushion UC starter Evan Shawver would need, throwing 90 pitches in a 6.0 inning outing, striking out eight and giving up one run on two hits. He notched career strikeout 150 during the game and moved to 3-1 on the year. Dean McCarthy closed out the seventh, striking out two in a one-inning session.
UC men's basketball Head Coach Wes Miller threw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game.
