TicketsINDIANAPOLIS. – The University of Cincinnati tennis team bounced back on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Butler on the road at the Butler Bubble.
The Bearcats started the day 1-0 after the duos of Cassie McLay and Elizabeth Pendergast on court one and Callie Flanagan and Kelli Niehaus on court three earned wins to secure the doubles point.
Emma Miceli (4-1) earned back-to-back singles wins on the weekend. Her fourth win of the season now gives her 72 career singles wins to own the No. 2 spot all-time in UC history. Kara Malony owns the No. 1 spot with 106 career singles wins. She also moves up to the No. 5 spot with 128 total career wins, surpassing Pam Whitehead who has 127 total career wins.
Maria Santilli bounced back from a tough loss against Utah to secure her singles win and improve to 3-1 on the season.
Kelli Niehuas single-handledly won her match with back-to-back 6-2 sweeps to improve to 3-0 in singles play.
Cassie McLay battled back after a first set loss to earn the singles point and improve to 2-3 on the season.
Ioana Guna moves to 3-2 and Elizabeth Pendergast to 1-4 on the season following their losses.
COACH TOTH ON THE WIN
"A very nice bounce back win today after last night's match. I felt it took us awhile to really get going today, even pretty deep into singles. It was probably a bit of my own doing the way I set the schedule for this weekend, but we have a resilient group that ultimately battled and got it done today. Butler played us tough. Their team really competes well."
COACH TOTH WATCH
With this win, Coach Toth improves to 75 career wins as the Bearcats head coach. He is four wins away from securing the No. 2 spot all-time and surpassing Marty Wolf's 79 career wins.
The Bearcats head up to Chicago to face off against the University of Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Feb. 4 and Depaul University on Saturday, Feb. 5.
