WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Cincinnati tennis team was victorious over Wichita State, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon on the road at the Coleman Tennis Complex.
Cincinnati extends its win streak to 10 games, which ties the longest win streak during head coach Eric Toth's tenure and the longest in program history. The last time the Bearcats won 10 in a row was during the 2016-17 season.
The Bearcats improve to 11-3 and the Shockers move to 6-9 on the season.
Doubles play started with a default win by freshman Callie Flanagan and redshirt sophomore Kelli Niehaus on court three. Redshirt seniors Ioana Guna and Emma Miceli went on to earn UC the singles point after defeating LingWei Kong and Harriet Hamilton on court two, 6-2.
Cincinnati got off to an early 2-0 start after Niehaus won her match by default on court six. Because it was by default, Niehaus remains 10-0 in singles play.
Miceli went on to sweep Clara Whitaker 6-0 and 6-0 on court five to earn the third point for Cincinnati and improves to 10-3 overall on the season.
Wichita State tied the match up 3-3 with three straight singles points on courts one, two, and three.
The final point came down to court four. Redshirt junior Maria Santilli fell in the first set to Harriet Hamilton, but came back to win the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2 to secure the singles point and the match point for UC. Santilli improves to 9-3 in singles action.
COACH TOTH ON THE WIN
"Another close battle that went our way. You have to give Wichita State's team a lot of credit for competing really well and almost pulling off the win short handed. Emma Miceli and Maria Santilli were standouts today and wer difference makers in today's victory."
