CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to the East Carolina Pirates, 12-10, Sunday at UC Baseball Stadium.
Redshirt sophomore pitcher Chase Hopewell (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Cincinnati (10-16, 1-2) despite going 2.2 innings and giving up only one earned run.
In addition to his three hits, redshirt junior outfielder Paul Komistek had a double, a walk and an RBI to lead the Bearcats. Redshirt sophomore catcher Joe Powell put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Redshirt sophomore infielder Ryan Nicholson also chipped in for Cincinnati, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bearcats were trailing 6-0 in the third inning before they started their comeback. Cincinnati's offense produced a three-run output that included back-to-back homers from Powell and Nicholson.
Despite the homers, the Pirates went on to expand their lead to 9-3 before the Bearcats offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fourth. The Cincinnati offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run double off the bat of redshirt sophomore catcher Cam Scheler, which brought the score to 9-7 in favor of the Pirates.
Cincinnati kept the Pirates off the board before rallying to snatch a 10-9 lead in the fifth. The Bearcats added three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of redshirt senior infielder Wyatt Stapp. The Bearcats were unable to hold the lead, as East Carolina scored three times over the remaining four innings to grab the 12-10 win.
GAME NOTES
» Komistek led the Bearcats on offense, picking up three hits in the ballgame. He ended up going 8-for-13 (.615) in the series, including seven hits in the past two games. His average is now up to .404, which leads the team.
» Powell was 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and two RBIs before leaving the game early, improving his team-best .781 slugging percentage. He ended the weekend with six hits and four RBIs.
» Nicholson blasted his seventh homer of the year today, giving him three homers in the past five games.
» Powell and Nicholson's back-to-back homers marked the third time the Bearcats have done that this season.
» Cincinnati went 6-for-16 (.375) with runners in scoring position.
» Stapp tied his season high of three RBIs in a game today, highlighted by a two-run single in the fifth inning.
» Seven different Bearcats knocked in an RBI today. It's the fourth time UC has accomplished that this year.
