Wichita, Kan. – The American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship meet continued today with finals in field events, the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the remaining events in the heptathlon and decathlon. Austin Edwards defended his two conference titles in long jump to become a three-time conference champion in the event.
Team Scores:
After day two of competition in Wichita the men's team sits in second with 51 points and the women's team sits in sixth with 29 points. Wichita State and Memphis lead the men's and women's team scores, respectively. The team leader board is expected to shift tomorrow with finals in the remaining field events and all running events and relays.
PERFORMANCES OF NOTE
Men's Long Jump:
Edwards set out with the goal of winning a third conference championship in the long jump and he did exactly that at the AAC Outdoor Championships. He finished in first with a season best of 7.66m (25' 1.75"), while also having the second-best jump of the day. His jump will send him to the NCAA Championship preliminary round in Bloomington, Ind. in two weeks.
Men's Decathlon:
Damien Berthenet went into the day sitting in third in the decathlon and was able to make his way into second place with first-place finishes in the javelin and discus throw and a second-place finish in the pole vault. He ended the decathlon with 6993 points. Berthenet was followed by Cannon Riddle, who finished third in the pole vault and comfortably took third place on the podium with 6944 points. Freshman Dominique Hall scored a point for the Bearcats as well with his eighth-place finish.
Men's Shot Put:
Sam Meece took another spot on the podium for the Bearcats with his second-place finish in the shot put, throwing 16.93m (55' 6.50"). Jackson Vollbrecht also threw a season best to take fourth and earn five more points for the Bearcats, with Korbin Spencer following in seventh place.
Women's Heptathlon:
Katie Straus held strong in fifth place in the heptathlon, finishing the final three events to score 5127 points. She ended the day with a first-place finish in the 800-meter run after placing fourth in the long jump earlier in the day. Juliet McGregor finished in 10th with 4746 points and Sydney Spears finished in 12th with 4613 points.
Track Prelims Qualifiers:
Freshman Brandon Johnson was the first athlete of the day to qualify for the finals with his 14.66 in the 110-meter hurdles. He was followed by Ellie Leather with the top time in the 800-meter run and Siro Piña Cardona, winning his heat of the 800-meter run to qualify for tomorrow's race. In the 400-meter dash, Faith Banks reported the fastest time of the day and a new personal best with a 52.99. Reigning champion Steven McElroy won his heat to automatically qualify for the men's 400m final in 46.78. Both Caisja Chandler and Chris Borzor won their heats of the 100m dash to qualify for tomorrow's finals as well.
NEXT UP
Finals in the remaining field events, running events and relays all take place tomorrow on the third and final day of the AAC Outdoor Championships. The meet will kick off at 3:30 p.m. EST with the men's high jump and wrap up around 8:45 p.m. after the conclusion of the men's 4x400m relay. An awards ceremony will take place at 9:05 p.m.
