CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team defeated Murray State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 2-0-2 (0-0-0 AAC).
After a few strong scoring chances from the first touch, Brandi Thomsen collected the ball in the final third and played it to an oncoming Ashley Barron, who finished it off with a strike for her first goal of the season in the 12th minute. The assist is the second of the season for Thomsen, who has tallied four points through the first four matches.
The Bearcats dominated possession for much of the first half, holding the Racers without a shot at the break.
Cincinnati continued to push the offensive pace out of the half as Maddie Swingle quickly found Ellie Flower, who beat a defender and fired a shot that found the lower right of the frame for her first collegiate goal after only 21 seconds of action. The goal at the 45:21 mark is the fastest goal out of a half recorded under head coach Neil Stafford.
The assist was also a collegiate first for Swingle.
Anna Rexford recorded her 100th career save off a free kick attempt in the 48th minute. Rexford added three saves this afternoon to give her nine to only one goal allowed through the first four matches. The one goal allowed in the first four contests is the lowest under Stafford.
The defense continued to make touches difficult for the Racers throughout the remainder of the 90 minutes, securing their third clean sheet of the season.
The Bearcats have now held the shot advantage in both wins this season, outshooting the Racers 12-3 on the afternoon.
Cincinnati will remain home to host Stony Brook next Thursday, Sept. 1 at 11:30 a.m. ET.
