DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team closed out competition at the Flyer Invitational this weekend in Dayton.
Following a hidden dual format, Cincinnati took on Northern Kentucky and host Dayton in singles and doubles action at Graul Tennis Complex.
"It was a positive start to our fall season," head coach Eric Toth said. "This is the earliest we have ever played an event and without a ton of team practice there were plenty of positive takeaways to be happy about."
The Bearcats swept all three courts in both doubles matches against the Norse and Flyers on Friday. Cincinnati wrapped up the first day of action with four singles victories against Dayton as Natasha Opaciuch, Katie Ferguson, Sofia Bruno and Hayley Hirsch picked up wins.
Freshman pair Opaciuch and Ferguson earned their first wins as Bearcats with 6-4 doubles victories in both matches.
"We have not placed a ton of emphasis on doubles in the early portion of the season, so our performance on Friday was the highlight of the weekend." Toth added.
Cincinnati opened competition on Saturday by clinching six singles wins over the Flyers. Maria Santili, Kelli Niehaus, Sanjana Reddy, Opaciuch, Bruno and Hirsch all secured their matches in straight sets. Santilli claimed all 12 points in her matchup with 6-0 set wins.
The Bearcats closed out the invitational with four more wins in singles against the Flyers. Reddy and Ferguson secured their courts, while Santilli and Bruno claimed their third singles victories of the weekend, all in straight sets.
"I thought that singles showed us that we need to play ourselves back into match shape, but there is plenty to be excited about and work on as we continue the fall season." Toth said.
Cincinnati will be back in action when the Bearcats travel to the Thunder of the Mountains on Sept. 23-25.
