OXFORD, Ohio— Seniors Maddie Walker and Matt Hoak each started the season strong, placing second overall in their respective races as the University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country teams opened their seasons Saturday, Sept. 3, at the RedHawk Rumble.
Both Bearcat teams found success on the Miami University Cross Country Course. The UC men placed second overall with 43 points in the 8k race. In the women's 5k, the UC women placed third with 57 points. Miami (Ohio) won both the men's (27) and women's (30) races.
"A good first race for both teams," Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Susan Seaton said. "It was exciting to see Matt and Maddie running to a strong second-place finish."
Walker lead the way for the UC women in the women's 5k, finishing second overall with a time of 17:47.03, two seconds behind her personal best. This is the sixth time in her career that she has placed inside the top-10 at a meet and is her highest finish at a cross country meet in her colligate career.
Hoak opened the season in mid-season form; in the men's eight 8k, he crossed the finish line at the 24:54.78 mark, coming in second place. His time is an 8k personal record, and it is the first time he has placed inside the top-10 in a cross country race.
Following Hoak was graduate student Christian Stevens who completed the race in 25:12.90, a personal record, and was the only other Bearcat to place inside the top-10, finishing seventh in the men's race.
Seven freshmen made their debut as Bearcats in Oxford, Ohio. "Our freshman got their first college race under their belt, with Seth Elking leading the men's and Sarah Madix for the women.
Elking was the third Bearcat to complete the men's 8k race, posting a time of 25:37.65. A native of Miamisburg, Ohio, he placed 11th overall in his first collegiate meet.
A native of Loveland, Ohio, Madix placed 12th overall in the women's 5k, recording a time of 18:40.15, in her first meet.
"It was pretty solid day out there for us," Assistant Cross Country Coach Lucas Rothenberger said. "Not perfect, plenty to improve upon but I think we accomplished what we set out ti do which is see where our races preparedness is at on Sept. 3rd.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 16, as they make the trip up to East Lansing for the Spartan Invite, hosted by Michigan State.
