CINCINNATI – Caitlyn Wilson scored a game-high 15 points off 5-7 from behind the arc to lead the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team to a 62-53 win over Radford inside Fifth Third Arena on Sunday.
"I was very impressed with our reponse defensively and that is what we talked about at halftime," head coach Michelle Clark-Heard. "That is something that we have to hang our hat on, especially when the shots are not going in. We have to focus on the little things to take the pressure off and not get tight."
With the win, Cincinnati improves to 2-1 on the season.
Jillian Hayes recorded her fourth career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Clarissa Craig turned in a career-high 11 points and five rebounds.
Mya Jackson added 11 points and five assists as four Bearcats scored in double figures for the first time since Feb. 19, 2022.
Leading 14-7 at the end of the first, the Bearcats' used a 6-0 run that was finished off by a steal and layup by Jada Scott to increase their advantage to as much as 13 midway through the second quarter and force a Highlander timeout. Radford responded after the timeout with a 11-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to three at the break.
Wilson's connected on a trio of field goals from distance that sparked a 18-9 run out of the half to open the Bearcats' largest lead of the game at 45-31. Wilson got rolling from deep on an offensive rebound and kick out from Mya Jackson, then proceeded to connect on back-to-back threes as the Bearcats took control of the game with 3:49 remaining in the third.
Cincinnati kept Radford at arm's length for the rest of the afternoon, letting the margin get no closer than seven points late in the fourth quarter.
The Bearcats forced 22 Highlander turnovers, converting them into a 24-11 advantage in points off turnovers. Cincinnati also got 24 points off its bench.
Cincinnati closes out the early season home stand when the Bearcats welcome Toledo on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
