BLOOMINGTON— Fred Moudani (shot put) and Steven McElroy (300m) each broke University of Cincinnati track and field records at the Hoosier Open on Friday.
In total, Bearcats recorded 11 all-time individual top-10 marks and claimed seven event wins in their 2022-23 season opener.
"Great first meet for the Bearcats," head coach Susan Seaton said. "We got to shake off the rust and put our fall training to the test. Two big school records by Steven McElroy in the 300m and Fred Moudani in the shot put led the way for the men's team today. Victoria Abunaw, with two event wins and a podium finish for high jumpers Taylor Beard and Lauren Barnes, showed the depth of the women's team. Several entries into the UC all-time top 10 are also encouraging."
In his first meet as a Bearcat transfer student, Moudani, shattered the Cincinnati shot put record with his event-winning mark of 19.21m. His mark is almost one whole meter better than Mackin Tudor's record of 18.25m.
McElroy broke another UC record as he won the men's 300m dash with a time of 33.24, breaking Chris Borzor record (33.73), which he set last year at the Hoosier Open. McElroy also placed second overall in the men's 60m dash, finishing with a time of 6.86 seconds.
Victoria Abunaw dominated the track at the Gladstien Fieldhouse, picking up event wins in both the women's 60m hurdles (8.44) and the women's 500m (1:15.02). In the 60m hurdles preliminary round, she ran an 8.38, improving on her third-place UC record time. Abunaw also claimed the fifth spot in the 500m record book with her time.
In the women's high jump, Bearcats swept the podium as Taylor Beard, Spirit Morgan, and Lauren Barnes swept the podium, each clearing the 1.76m bar.
Cincinnati also swept the men's and women's triple jumps as Carlos Kouassi (15.08m) and Anaya Dees (12.11m) each took home first place, respectively.
Alexandria Hunter opened up the meet by recording the sixth-best women's weight throw (18.25m) in UC history and Korbin Spencer followed suit in the men's weight throw recording the eighth-best mark (17.33m) in school history.
In the women's 300m dash, both Alicia Thorpe (39.27) and Jayda Bushay (39.47) each ran Bearcat top 10 times. Thorpe now holds the seventh spot in the record book, while Bushay claimed the ninth spot.
Nyile Facey also turned on the jets in the women's 60m hurdles, as she ran the ninth fastest 60m hurdle in UC history.
Hannah Jackson placed third overall in the women's shot put (14.66m) with the all-time 10th-best UC mark and Kyle Smith ran the 10th-fastest 500m in UC history, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:05.18.
"We hope to carry this momentum through winter break and look forward to our return to action in mid-January," Seaton said.
