CINCINNATI – Freshman guard A'riel Jackson turned in a career-high 19 points, but the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dropped its conference home opener to Temple 77-73 inside Fifth Third Arena on Saturday.
 
The 19 points ties the most by a freshman since Jillian Hayes scored 20 points against Temple on Jan. 13, 2020. Jackson finished 5-9 from the field and 8-9 from the line in 26 minutes.
 
Cincinnati is now 7-8, 0-2 in the AAC on the season.
 
The Bearcats were active on the glass from the tip, securing seven offensive rebounds in the first quarter to command a 15-13 lead at the end of the period. Cincinnati held their opponent without a field goal for a 2:44-minute stretch to build a 15-8 advantage before Temple responded with a 5-0 run to close out the frame.
 
Junior guard Jillian Hayes recorded 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds, her 13th double-digit scoring game this season. Junior forward/center Malea Williams tied a team-high eight rebounds and three blocks, her fifth multi-block game this season.
 
After trailing 31-22 with 3:16 remaining before the half, Cincinnati benefited from a 6-2 run that was closed out on a jumper from senior forward Jada Scott as time expired that cut the deficit 33-26 at the break.
 
Cincinnati battled back from 50-39 with a 9-5 burst over the final 2:37 of the third quarter. The Bearcats continued the secure the momentum in front of the home crowd, scoring the first four points of the fourth to pull within one possession at 55-52.
 
Senior guard Dais'Ja Trotter converted on a trio of free throws after being fouled on a corner three to cut the deficit to 63-61 at the 5:32 mark in the fourth, the closest margin for the remainder of the game.

The Bearcats converted on 20-27 for 74.1 percent from the free throw line. Cincinnati attempted at least 20 free throws in 10 games this season, while this is the second game that the Bearcats have made at least 20. 
 
Cincinnati hits the road to Dallas to take on SMU on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
