TicketsCINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team dominated en route to a 7-0 win over Dayton inside Western Athletic Club on Wednesday.
Cincinnati secured the doubles point in dominant fashion with victories on courts two and three. The Bearcats built a multiple-point advantage at each position before the pair of freshman Katie Ferguson and redshirt junior Kelli Niehaus secured the middle court, 6-2. Shortly after, the tandem of redshirt junior Sofia Bruno and sophomore Elizabeth Pendergast clinched a 6-4 win on court three to take the initial point.
Sophomore Callie Flanagan and redshirt junior Cassie McLay were leading 5-4 on court one when the point was clinched.
Cincinnati maintained the momentum by taking early leads on five of six singles courts. Redshirt senior Maria Santilli extended the margin with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three. Ferguson and Flanagan followed with straight set wins on courts six and five, respectively, to secure the match win.
Niehaus fought off a third set on court four by taking a second set seven-point tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6 (3). McLay and Pendergast each battled through third-set tiebreakers to win at the top two positions.
The sweep marks the first of the season for the Bearcats.
Cincinnati remains home for the second of three matches this week, taking on conference opponent Memphis on Friday, March. 24.
