FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team fell 61-52 to Tulane in the first round of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championship on Monday.
Cincinnati concludes the regular season 9-21 overall, 2-14 in the AAC.
Junior forward/center Malea Williams finished with a team-high 12 points, five rebounds and five blocks. Williams tied a career-high with the two threes made and posted her 11th multi-block contest of the season.
Known for their defense entering the contest, each team limited early offensive possessions to keep the score 5-4 at the first media timeout. Senior guard Jada Scott secured an offensive rebound and found senior guard Caitlyn Wilson from behind the arc to tie the game at nine with 2:27 minutes left in the first quarter.
The three by Wilson sparked an 8-0 run, the longest of the contest, over 1:54 minutes of action to secure a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Bearcats held the Green Wave scoreless and forced three turnovers over a 3:09-minute stretch in the second quarter to command a 20-16 advantage halfway through the period.
Williams beat the first-half buzzer with an off-balanced jump shot to take a 26-22 lead at the half. Williams turned in four blocks, four points and three rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
The Bearcats finished with 11 blocks in the game, the second most this season and tied for the third most in program history.
Tulane went on a run of five of six field goals made at the midway point through the third quarter to take a 39-34 lead.
Senior forward Jadyn Scott finished through contact to trim the deficit to 39-36 with a minute left in the third quarter. Green Wave's Dynah Jones connected on a three to make it 42-36 entering the final period.
Trailing 44-36 early in the fourth quarter, senior guard Dais'Ja Trotter knocked down a three to trim the margin back to two possessions.
The Green Wave opened a double-digit lead with 3:06 minutes left in the final quarter. Williams knocked down her pair of threes in the final moments of the fourth quarter, but the Bearcats could not mount the late comeback.
Cincinnati forced 20 Tulane turnovers, its ninth game with 20-plus turnovers forced this season. The Bearcats collected 17 offensive rebounds, tied for the third most this season.
