CINCINNATI—The University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country program will open the 2023 cross country season with a trip up to Oxford, Ohio for the RedHawk Rumble on Friday.
The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. with the men's 6K, followed by the women's 5K starting at 10:10 a.m. The RedHawk Rumble is hosted by Miami (Ohio) and is held on the Miami University Cross Country Course.
We are excited to get the season started," men's cross country coach Lucas Rothenberger said. "Every time we put on the singlet, we want to take full advantage of the opportunity. The race will be 6,000 meters and we will have a nice chance to go live against both Indiana and Miami (OH). There is a huge value in going through the ritual, and process of pinning a bib on to a singlet, lacing up your spikes, dealing with the nerves and hearing that gun go off. We really can't simulate those emotions in a practice session. I look forward to seeing how our group handles the environment, and we will continue to march on with some valuable feedback as we navigate a long season ahead."
This is the second year in a row the Bearcats have opened the season at the RedHawk Rumble. Last year, graduate students Matt Hoak and Maddie Walker led the way with second-place finishes in their respective races.
"This race is an opportunity to work alongside our teammates and see where we are at as a group," women's cross country coach Sarah Anderson said. "The first two weeks of training have shown me that even though we are a young group, we have a lot of upside and a lot of exciting growth to look forward to this season. A lot of women will put the Bearcat uniform on for the first time, so the goal is to run with gratitude and compete with the bodies around us."
Cincinnati returns 13 student-athletes, seven men and six women, back for another season. Highlighting the group is graduate students Tyler Wirth, Carmela Henning, Hoak and Walker, as well as sophomore Gwen Stare.
The Bearcats brought in 12 newcomers this year. The women's team added seven freshmen while the men's team welcomed three. The majority of the newcomers are expected to make their first appearance in a Cincinnati uniform this weekend.
Each team also added a graduate transfer from the portal to complete this year's roster. On the women's side, Lauren Greiwe transferred in after attending Southern Indiana. The men's team picked up Jed Helker, who spent four-years at Wichita State before spending last season at Oklahoma.
