CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati men's golf team defended its home course on the first 36-hole day, taking a three-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round.
Connor McNeely matched a career-low with a 6-under 65 in the first round, one of two players in the entire field without a birdie. He leads the field by three strokes. Sam Jean, who was in attendance during the day, won the event last year.
"First off, I'm unbelievably proud of our resilience today," head coach Doug Martin said. "The golf course was extremely difficult and required a lot of high-level shots. Connor McNeely shot 9-under for the day, and 65 in Round 1 was incredible. I probably hadn't gotten after a team as hard as I did Wednesday and Thursday, but they responded today. They hit key shots to keep our momentum going and made key putts. I challenged them tomorrow to come out and be ready to compete and not leave any doubt. I'm excited to see how they show up tomorrow."
William McDonald and Ryan Ford are each tied for 13th with 1-under par scores, seeking their highest finishes of the season. Both had a 72 to start, their lowest opening-round scores of the season.
Sophomore and UAB transfer Cole Imig led the group of five individual performers with a tie for 28th at 3-over. Chris Harpum followed at 45th in his collegiate debut, with fellow sophomores Jackson Finney and Harrison Sims making their entries as well.
Admission is open to all for Tuesday's finale. Live scoring is available here.
