CINCINNATI— The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team shutout Iowa State, 1-0, to earn the program's first Big 12 victory on Sunday inside Gettler Stadium.
The Bearcats picked up their second win of the year to move to 2-5-3 (1-1-1), while Iowa State dropped to 3-7-1 (1-1-1).
"It was a big win," head coach Erica Demers said. "For us, we are fighting to get into the top 10 [in the Big 12 standings] and we knew that this was going to be a battle. I thought this was going to be a game with a small margin of error and I am happy it swung for us."
After drawing a foul inside the box, senior forward Ellie Flower stepped up and scored the game-deciding goal on a penalty kick in the 26th minute. The goal was Flower's first of the season and the third of her career.
Cincinnati continued to apply pressure to Iowa State for the remainder of the game. The Bearcats out-shot the Cyclones 10-4 and put five on goal.
UC's stout defense was on full display by not allowing Iowa State to record a shot in the first half. The Bearcats out-shot the Cyclones 6-0 before heading in the break with the lead.
Senior goalkeeper Anna Rexford only faced two shots on the goal as she claimed her second clean sheet of the season and the 13th shutout of her career, the eighth-most in program history.
The victory was also Rexford's 21st career win, which tied her with former Bearcat Tracy Hale for the sixth-most in program history. The Wilmore, Ky., native's two saves moved her into 10th in all-time career saves as she passed Hale with 170.
The win over Iowa State was the first Big 12 victory for any UC Athletics program since the Bearcats joined the Power 5 conference on July 1.
Sophomore midfielder Megan Smith was also honored with a scholarship after the match from the family of former Bearcat Ally Sidloski, a midfielder who tragically passed away on May 22, 2021. The Bearcats unveiled a plaque dedicated to Ally that will be placed in the team's locker room to honor her legacy.
