CINCINNATI— University of Cincinnati cross country graduate student Tyler Wirth was named the Big 12 Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, announced by the conference on Tuesday.

"Tyler had a nice opener this past weekend," men's cross country coach Lucas Rothenberger said. "It is really early on in the season, but it is encouraging to see him in about as good of a spot as we could expect for early September. We will have a lot bigger effort in a couple of weeks at Roy Griak, so that will be another nice checkmark."

Wirth earned the distinction after winning the men's 6k at the RedHawk Rumble on Sept. 2. He claimed the men's individual title with a personal-best time of 18:01.51.

The Hawley, Pa., native held a blistering mile pace of 4:50 to achieve the feat. It was Wirth's first individual career cross country race win.

Wirth is the first Bearcat to earn the new conference's honor as Cincinnati is in its inaugural season in the Big 12. This also marks the second time in his career he has earned a conference athlete of the week award.
