LOUDON, Tenn. -- Sophomore Rylan Wotherspoon's 2-under 68 was one stroke off a career-best, and it led the Cincinnati men's golf team through its opening day of the Visit Knoxville Collegiate. The Bearcats are 11th after traveling directly from its season opener in Wisconsin ended Tuesday.
Wotherspoon's low is a 67 in last year's fall finale, and he also had a 68 in the NCAA Regional for one of his seven rounds in the 60s. He sprinkled three birdies around Friday's action.
"We had a really solid round going today through 12 holes," head coach Doug Martin said. "We were 1-under with six to play, and we drove the ball very poorly the last six holes. You cannot play from the rough out here, and we kept missing the fairways which led to very challenging approach shots. We knew at the start of the week that driving the ball in the fairway was going to be key. We must improve on this the next two days. Rylan had a real solid round today."
Ryan Ford followed to tie in 46th with a 3-over 73, with Connor McNeely (75) and Ty Gingerich (76) to round out the scores. Freshman McKean Collins, competing individually again, boasted a 72, which was a nine-stroke improvement from his best debut round in Wisconsin.
