Cincinnati Women Dominate Season Opener, Split Dual with Northwestern

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving program earned 12 event wins in its season opener against Northwestern on Friday at Keating Aquatics Center.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving program earned 12 event wins in its season opener against Northwestern on Friday at Keating Aquatics Center.
 
The women's team dominated with a 163-99 victory, while the men fell short to the Wildcats, 169-93.
 
Divers sophomore Alex Givens (282.6) and junior Will Claus (277.58) started the year off strong as the duo claimed the top two spots in the men's 1-meter. Givens claimed the first 1-meter dive dual meet victory of his career.  
 
In the 3-meter competition, sophomore Lauren Melia earned a third-place finish with a score of 244.80, while freshman Lacey Neighbor placed fourth (216.23) in her Bearcats' debut. 
 
The Bearcats started the meet off hot with a first-place finish in the women's 200 medley relay. The team of Grace Gavin, Joleigh Crye, Sonja Aarsvold and Meghan Fleury recorded a time of 1:42.74.
 
The men's 400 freestyle relay team of Jon Osa, Thomas Matthew, Jet Fuhrmann and Max Plumley notched a second-place finish with a time of 3:02.32.
 
The men's performance was highlighted by freshman Kyle Bumgardner's first collegiate win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:03.20. Senior Drew Hawthorne also grabbed a first-place finish in the men's 100-yard butterfly recording a time of 49.85.
 
Senior Jessica Davis earned herself three event wins in the 50 freestyle (23.37), 100 freestyle (51.51) and 200 freestyle (1:50.33). Crye also notched two first-place finishes in the women's 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.19) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.23).

The Bearcats will travel to Gambier, Ohio for their first road dual against Kenyon on Saturday, Oct. 21.
