RALEIGH, N.C.— Senior Rylee Penn broke the University of Cincinnati's 1,500-meter record on Friday in the Bearcat's first meet of the 2023 outdoor track and field season.

A select group of UC men's and women's distance runners made the trip to Raleigh, N.C., to compete in one of the premier outdoor distance meets of the season, the Raleigh Relays.

"We had a small but mighty crew at Raleigh Relays this week," women's distance coach Sarah Anderson said. "Jodie Pierce had an outstanding day, winning her heat of the 1500m with a new personal record. Rylee Penn had another impressive performance, running hard from the gun and competed her way to a massive personal record which puts her second in the nation. Lots more work to be done, but a solid start for the women."

Coming off a break-out indoor track season, Penn carried her success over into the outdoor season by breaking the UC 1,500-meter record with a time of 4:10.13. Penn finished second out of 185 athletes that posted a time in the event and her time currently is the second-best in the nation.

Penn now holds three Cincinnati track and field records: outdoor 1,500-meter, indoor mile (4:34.44) and indoor 3,000-meter (9:12.44). Each has been set this year.

Junior Matt Hoak led the way for the men's team by running the fourth-fastest 1,500-meter (3:44.99) in program history, as he placed 22nd overall in the race. Classmate Tyler Wirth was right behind Hoak, placing 23rd out of 117 event participants with a time of 3:45.15. Both their marks currently sit 20th and 21st in the NCAA, respectively.

Joining Penn in recording a UC women's all-time top 10 mark in the 1,500-meter was junior Jodie Pierce. She moved to fourth in the record book with her personal best time of 4:28.83.

Senior Maddie Walker opened her outdoor campaign by recording a time of 35:20.48 in the women's 10,000-meter race. She placed 14th overall and her time currently ranks 36th in the NCAA East Region.

The pair of graduate students Milo Greder and Jamie Dailey each record UC all-time top 10 times in the men's 10,000-meter. Greder ran a 29:04.44 to move to third in the record book and finished 21st overall in the race. Dailey recorded the fifth fastest 10,000-meter with a time of 29:41.84.
