Cincinnati Drops Opening Day Doubleheader to Jacksonville

The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped its season-opening doubleheader to Jacksonville on Friday at John Sessions Stadium.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped its season-opening doubleheader to Jacksonville on Friday at John Sessions Stadium.

The Bearcats were swept by the Dolphins by scores of 8-6 and 11-3. The series finale will be played at 11 a.m. on Sunday. 

Senior outfielder Josh Hegemann went 4-for-6 with one run scored, one RBI and a stolen base in two starts. Junior Tommy O'Connor finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored while Landyn Vidourek and Kerrington Cross each homered on the day. 
 
Dalton Pearson, Josh Kross, Christian Mitchelle, Hunter Jessee, Seth Logue, Carson Marsh, Nathan Taylor, Shawn Parnell, Luke Sefcik, Ryan Insco and Drew Erdmann all made their Bearcat debuts on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE

Jacksonville struck first with a four-spot in the bottom of the first.

The Bearcats got on the board in the top of the third. O'Connor notched a lead-off a single to left field. Vidourek then stepped into the batter's box and launched a two-run home run over the right field wall. His fifth career homer cut UC's deficit to two (4-2).
 
Cincinnati took the lead in the top of the fourth with three runs on two hits and an error. Lauden Brooks drew a lead-off walk, followed by a double to right field by Hegemann. Pearson and O'Connor each drove in a run before Kross notched his first hit as a Bearcat  a two-out RBI double to right field (5-4).
 
The Dolphins evened the ballgame in the home half of the fourth. Logue made his first start as a Bearcat and allowed five runs on five hits and struck out two batters with four walks in 4.2 innings. 
 
The Bearcats reclaimed the lead with one run on two hits and an error in the top of the sixth. Pearson recorded his first hit as a Bearcat with a one-out single. Jessee came in for Pearson and later scored on a throwing error at first (6-5).
 
Jacksonville got one back on an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and walked it off with a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth for the 8-6 final score. 
 
O'Connor went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored while Kross went 1-of-4 with a double and walk. Griffin Hugus tossed 3.2 innings in relief and allowed just one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Marsh (0-1) took the loss on the mound. 
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
Cincinnati got on the board in the top of the first after a three-run homer to center field by Cross. It was the 19th of his career.
 
The Dolphins then scored five straight to take the lead after four innings (5-3). Starter Tommy Boba (0-1) tossed 3.2 innings with six strikeouts. 
 
Parnell came out of the bullpen in the top of the sixth and provided a shutout inning with a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore Brenden Garula also did not allow a run in 1.1 innings in relief. 

Jacksonville went on to claim game two of the doubleheader by a score of 11-3.
