Cincinnati Shines in Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving program completed its first-ever Big 12 Conference Championships Saturday evening inside Mylan Park Aquatic Center.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving program completed its first-ever Big 12 Conference Championships Saturday evening inside Mylan Park Aquatic Center.
 
The Bearcats made a statement by collecting 39 podium finishes, 11 school records and 19 NCAA B-Cut times.
 
Cincinnati men and women both finished fourth overall.

Cincinnati's relays found major success this week bringing home the hardware and rewriting the record book.
 
The women's 400-yard medley relay team of Lily Jones, Joleigh Crye, Grace Gavin and Jessica Davis brought home the silver medal with a new school record time of 3:33.89, crushing the previous time by five seconds.
 
On the men's side, the team of Jon Osa, Hunter Gubeno, Reed Lucero, and Drew Hawthorne secured third place with a time of 3:10.43, the second-fastest time in program history.
 
During the Friday night finals, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kaylee Nagel, Sonja Aarsvold, Davis and Crye broke the school record and earned the bronze medal with a time of 1:30.58.
 
The men's team of Max Plumley, Hawthorne, Osa and Gubeno shattered the previous school record, recording a time of 1:18.56 and finishing fourth overall.
 
On Saturday, the Bearcats collected two bronze medals in the 400-yard freestyle relay paired with two new school records.
 
For the women, Sophie Curtis, Rose, Davis and Nagel previously sat sixth in program history but jumped up to the top spot with a time of 3:18.42.
 
The team of Jet Fuhrmann, Hawthorne, Gubeno and Osa registered a time of 2:52.45, beating their previous record.
 
// INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS
Crye found success in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday night as she broke her own school record with a time of 58.24 which also earned her a NCAA B-Cut time, the bronze medal and the ninth spot in the nation.

Gubeno grabbed the silver medal in the 200-yard backstroke (1:39.95), breaking the school record that was previously set by former Bearcat and current assistant coach Blake Hanna.

Osa (19.68) and Davis (22.38) both notched the second-fastest time in program history in the 50-yard freestyle and finished fourth overall.

Davis went on to earn her fifth medal of the week with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.72. She also finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.13).

// FRESHMEN SHOWIN' OUT
Cincinnati freshmen Julie Rose, Libby Michel, Kyle Bumgardner and Joe Swain all earned their first career podium finishes this week.

Rose earned sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.45), seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.21) and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Bumgardner finished fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (3:50.42), seventh in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:33.48) and ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke B-Final (1:57.88).

Michel saw the podium in the 400-yard individual medley securing the fourth-place spot with a time of 4:16.20.  

On the final night, Swain picked up eighth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:46.64.
