TRINITY, Texas – Ty Gingerich starred with a 7-under 65 in the first round, the lowest ever by a Bearcat on a conference championship stage, to tie for the tournament lead after Monday's Big 12 action.

Not only was it also one stroke off a school record, Gingerich is also coming off a seventh-place finish at the Mossy Oak Collegiate, his highest of the year.

"This is the Ty we've seen for 2 ½ years," head coach Doug Martin said. "He's someone we can rely on every single day. He's gone through a rough patch the last 6-8 months, and that's what this game does. It beats you up, but true great players battle their way out, and that's what he's done."

Gingerich had eight birdies and one bogey in the morning session.

The Bearcats were tied for second with a 3-under 285 after the first round, before a much more challenging nightcap that saw a 306 and 12th place standing.

"We had a pretty solid week last week at Mossy Oak, then two good days here. I really thought we were ready to play, and it showed in the morning round. Whispering Pines is a championship venue. It's probably the hardest or second-hardest we've played all year, then adding 36 holes in a day is a real challenge. I'm disappointed in our afternoon round performance. We had too many bogeys, doubles and triples. We just made too many mistakes, but the good news is we have 36 holes left and showed what we could do in the morning."

Ryan Ford and Connor McNeely also earned remarks from Martin for an even-72 in the first round.

Tuesday's round can be followed here. Wednesday's will be there as well, in addition to ESPN+ coverage from 1:30-5:30 p.m. ET.
