CINCINNATI — The University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country program's will open the 2024 season with a trip to Bloomington, Ind., for the Sam Bell Invitational on Friday.
The meet starts at 6 p.m. with the women's 4k, followed by the men's 6k at 6:40 p.m. The Sam Bell Invitational is hosted by Indiana and will be held on the Sam Bell Cross Country Course.
"We are excited to get the season started, both on the men's and women's side," associate head coach of men's & women's cross country Lucas Rothenberger said. "The first meet of the season is always a good reminder of why we put in all the time, effort and sacrifice. Racing opportunities during the fall are always a bit limited, so we definitely try to get something valuable out of each race. We are excited to see how both groups handle the environment and see where we are at from a decision-making standpoint at the start of a long season ahead."
Last year the Bearcats opened the season at the RedHawk Rumble. Former Bearcat Tyler Wirth came in first place in the men's 6k (4:49.9), while sophomore Claire Curtsinger led the Cincinnati women in the 5k, placing seventh (5:47.3).
"As the new season unfolds, this Friday will be a great opportunity for our cross country athletes to test their growth from last year to this year," women's cross country coach Sarah Anderson said. "As we incorporate new bodies and new goals into the team, learning to utilize your teammates and stay present in the pressure are the two main goals for this first race. This group has never opened with a 4k before, so it will be a fun and exciting new challenge for the team. I'm looking forward to seeing how the women engage and motivate each other as we prepare to start the season on a high note"
Cincinnati returns 16 student-athletes, seven men and nine women. Highlighting the group is graduate student Jed Helker and juniors Claire Curtsinger, Seth Elking, Gwen Stare, Bobby Ganser and Sarah Madix.
The Bearcats brought in nine newcomers this year. The women's team added three freshmen while the men's team welcomed six.
