EUGENE, Ore. — Leo Wessel maintained his consistency off a strong 36-hole Monday to produce an even-71 and tie for 14th as Cincinnati finished sixth in Oregon's Duck Invitational.
UC jumped a tourney-high three spots in the final round to earn that spot, which included moving past No. 46 Grand Canyon. The host Ducks rallied at the end to jump Wyoming by a spot for the title.
"I very much appreciate the fight in this team," head coach Doug Martin said. "We played good enough to win again this week. Unfortunately we continue to make self-inflicted mistakes that cost us each round. We are going to continue working to clean things up. Another very solid week for Leo, he is maturing very quickly as a player. We have a couple of days of prep in Palm Springs before we head to Arizona to compete again on Monday."
The freshman was playing in his fourth event of the year, with the last one being 13th at the Johnnie-O last week. His other two were the first ones of the fall.
Connor McNeely, whose 1-under 70 was the best for the Bearcats on the day, tied for 18th. He had three-straight birdies at one point on the heels of an eagle late in Monday's action.
As with Monday's two rounds, Cincinnati extended its tournament-best, par-5 score to 4.51 (22-under).
Next up for the Bearcats is the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, played in Maricopa, Arizona, on Monday and Tuesday.
