CINCINNATI — Sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s set the tone for an exciting hour and 40 minutes at Historic Nippert Stadium on Saturday afternoon, where the Cincinnati football team had a snap count in the 70s while working on some individual drills in front of a great crowd at its Spring Showcase, presented by Skyline Chili.
Sheakley Lawn had its full Fun Zone in effect as well, with an AD Tailgate taking place at 10:30 a.m.
"We were right where we wanted to be today, short and sweet," head coach Scott Satterfield said. "A lot of young guys got reps today, and some newcomers made some plays as well. We also wanted to see some field goals in an atmosphere like this, and that was good. We knocked those down as well, then I thought Max Fletcher also punted the ball really well today. Overall, it was a good day. I think both sides made some plays, and that's what you want to see anytime you have a scrimmage like this."
Chance Williams was a key contributor with a 50-plus yard TD run, followed by a two-yard score on the next series. Jeff Caldwell, the 6-foot-5 Lindenwood transfer at wide receiver, ran a great route and hauled in a tough catch in the corner of the endzone from Brady Lichtenberg.
"The wideouts did a great job," quarterback Brendan Sorsby said. "Jeff (Caldwell) made a good play. Whenever (Brady Lichtenberg) Lichty threw that ball up to him, that was a good one to see."
Tayden Barnes and Antwan Peek Jr. both had interceptions to lead the defense. Barnes, a West Texas native and former New Mexico State safety, described his pick.
"It was a scramble drill, so I was trying to attach to a body and make sure who I attached to couldn't catch it," he said. "I attacked it and kept my toes inbounds."
Cincinnati exercised some discretion on the defensive line with Jalen Hunt, who missed all of last year due to injury, and All-American Dontay Corleone getting limited reps and not participating, respectively. For what it's worth, the latter had nothing to do with Corleone throwing out the first pitch at the Reds game later in the evening.
Joining Corleone in throwing out the first pitch at tonight's Reds game will be fellow Cincinnati native Joe Royer. New Bearcats Volleyball head coach Danijela Tomic will deliver the game ball tonight as well.
Mikah Coleman was in action as well, and his 6-foot-5 frame was sorely missed all of last year on the edge.
"The young guys are still going to come on," Satterfield said. "They are growing. They are getting better. You cannot have enough depth up front, that's the one thing in the Big 12. You lean on these big guys week in and week out, and you have to be able to rotate those guys and put more big bodies in."
The Bearcats will take on a few more practices next week to wrap up the spring. Stay tuned to the social media channels and website for more information on summer events and updates for next season at Nippert Stadium.
