CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati lacrosse team notched a 9-6 home win over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon at Nippert Stadium.

The Bearcats improved to 5-3, while the Mountaineers fell to 2-3.

The first quarter saw strong defense as the Bearcats led 1-0 at the conclusion of the opening period. Cincinnati ignited a quick 3-0 run to open the second period and take a 4-1 lead, but the Mountaineers responded and closed the gap to 5-4 entering the half. The third quarter remained a defensive battle, but the Bearcats pulled away with three goals in the fourth to secure the win.

Graduate goalie Emma Mielke impressed between the pipes, recording seven saves on a season-best .778 save percentage. Selhorn led the offensive attack with four goals and an assist — her fourth game this season with at least four scores. Paige Counts and Devon Cherry each added two goals, with Counts also tallying two assists.

Both squads totaled 22 shots, but the Bearcats' goalie play proved to be the difference, as Mielke and Bella Kerr combined for 11 saves compared to just four for Mount St. Mary's. Cincinnati also dominated the draw circle 13-4.

Selhorn struck first, breaking the deadlock at the 4:42 mark with the only goal of the opening quarter.

The second period opened with Mount St. Mary's MK Allingham knotting the game at 1-all in the opening seconds. Cincinnati responded with a 3-0 surge sparked by a Brooke Peck goal and capped by Selhorn, taking a 4-1 lead. The Mountaineers rallied late, stringing together a run of their own to narrow the deficit to 5-4 at the break.

The third quarter remained a defensive battle with only two goals scored. Counts converted in the opening minute to push Cincinnati's lead to 6-4, but Brooke Molchanoff answered for the Mountaineers to trim the deficit back to one.

The Bearcats pulled away with three unanswered goals in the fourth. Selhorn struck first before Cherry converted off an Alyse Keels assist to make it 8-5. Cherry added her second goal of the quarter with 14 seconds remaining, rounding out the three-goal victory.
