CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team entered the Baseball America Top 25 rankings on Monday, slotting in at No. 25.
Cincinnati boasts a 19-7 overall record and went 4-1 last week, taking two games at Utah Valley before winning its Big 12 series vs. Utah.
This marks the second time in as many seasons that the Bearcats have been nationally ranked following last year’s appearances in the D1Baseball Top 25.
A high-powered offense and a deep, talented pitching staff has propelled UC to one of the best starts in program history. The Bearcats have pounded out 283 hits thus far, ranking fifth nationally, and their 53 home runs are 16th in the country. They also rank among the Top 20 in runs scored (221, 16th), and stolen bases (63, 18th). UC’s pitchers are tied for second in the Big 12 in strikeouts (243), rank second in K/BB ratio (2.73) and are third in ERA (4.61).
Individually, sophomore Quinton Coats has been on a tear the first six weeks of the season, leading the country in home runs (18) and total bases (104) while ranking second in slugging percentage (.954) He is only five home runs away from tying the UC single-season record of 23 set by Mike Spina in 2009.
Coats is one of six hitters batting above .300 for the Bearcats, with sophomore Derrick Pitts (.377) leading the way in that regard.
On the mound, junior Nathan Taylor is tied for third in the Big 12 in strikeouts (44) and just punched out 10 in the win vs. Utah on Friday night.
