CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati lacrosse team fell 16-5 to No. 5 Florida on Saturday afternoon at Gettler Stadium. The loss moves the Bearcats to 8-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Meanwhile, Florida moved to 12-2 and 4-0 in the Big 12, clinching at least a share of the conference regular season title.
Cincinnati was led by senior Lexie Wolfe, who finished with two goals on the afternoon. Sophomore Paige Selhorn added a goal and an assist, while junior Paige Counts also chipped in a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Bella Kerr was outstanding in relief, making 11 saves in over 39 minutes of work. Florida's offense was paced by Boo DeWitt, who finished with four goals.
Florida owned a 37-18 shot advantage on the afternoon. The Gators also led 12-10 in draw controls and forced 14 Cincinnati turnovers compared to just nine for the Bearcats.
Cincinnati got off to a tough start, falling behind 5-0 before the Bearcats got on the board. Wolfe broke through with a goal assisted by Selhorn to get Cincinnati going, and Hailey Joy Simpson added another to pull the Bearcats within 5-2 heading into the second quarter.
Selhorn kept Cincinnati fighting in the second period, converting a free-position goal to make it 7-3 at the half.
The third quarter proved to be a difficult stretch for the Bearcats, as Florida outscored Cincinnati 5-0 to push their advantage to 12-3. DeWitt opened the period with a man-up goal following a green card on UC's Haley Mario, and the Gators continued to pour it on from there.
The Bearcats continued to battle in the fourth quarter, with Wolfe netting her second goal of the afternoon and Counts finishing off a nice feed from Lilly Stelzer to account for the final score of 16-5.
