CINCINNATI — The University of Cincinnati football team held its first scrimmage on Saturday morning, a hot and humid session at Nippert Stadium. The scrimmage lasted about two hours and 30 minutes, by far the Bearcats' longest practice session of training camp so far. The Bearcats have three weeks from Saturday to prepare for their season opener against ACC foe Boston College.

Head coach Scott Satterfield and his staff did a solid job rotating players into the action today, giving the first, second, third, and lower units an extensive number of reps.

"I thought early on we had good energy, and then I thought there was a lull toward the end of it," Satterfield said. "But obviously some good things out there, and some things we need to get better at."

Early in the action, junior running back James Lewis scored the first touchdown of the day on a drive led by junior quarterback Samaj Jones.

The highlight of the day came on a broken-play scramble by Jones, in which he rolled to his right under duress and heaved a long pass across the field to a streaking receiver, freshman Dadrien Waller, in the right corner of the end zone for what was at least a 40-yard throw on the run.

Cornerback Kenny Worthy continued his hot streak in camp by intercepting another pass, a common theme throughout camp. There were several other passes where Worthy got his hands on the ball or came close to making a play.

"Kenny's had a great camp," Satterfield said. "He's a solid DB for us. He's probably been the most consistent DB we've had this camp. He's very aggressive and confident in his ability, which is good."

Safety MJ Cannon echoed that praise when asked about Worthy's potential turnover production this season.

"A lot. A lot," Cannon said. "As we've seen out there, he should have had three today. He's a great player, he's a ballhawk, plays with great energy, emotion, and I can't wait to see what he does this year."

Cannon also praised defensive coordinator Nate Woody, noting the impact of his scheme and leadership on the secondary.

"Woody's been around the game a long time, he knows a lot," Cannon said. "He's one of the greatest minds I've seen coaching a defense. Learning from him is amazing, I've started to see things through a new lens, and I think we are going to be a good defense this year."

Quarterback Liam O’Brien again showcased his athleticism on an impressive 20-plus-yard scramble. Several plays later, he rolled out to his right in the red zone and found 6-foot-5 freshman wide receiver Joshua Smith, who made an impressive leaping catch in the back-right corner.

Satterfield preached consistency in his post-practice media availability, which was highlighted on a play where JC French IV threw a wide-open slant in the red zone for what would have been an easy touchdown, but it was dropped by the intended receiver.

Several plays later, French capped the scoring drive with a touchdown pass to sophomore Giyahni Kontosis, who made a leaping catch in the red zone.

"I thought the two practices prior to today he was outstanding," Satterfield said of French's performance. "Today wasn't as good as those two practices, I don't think, but he made some good plays. Certainly, room to get better, but a solid performance."

Cincinnati opens the 2026 season at home at Nippert Stadium on Saturday, September 5, against Boston College. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on FOX.
